Top 6 Skincare And Hair Secrets Backed By Science That You Can Implement Today

When it comes to skincare,
there’s no shortage of products out there. There are a myriad of options,
ranging from luxury products like La Mer to drug store brands like Olay.
Regardless of price, all of these products claim to be the best at reducing
wrinkles and fine lines while improving overall skin health. However, which
ones actually work? For National Healthy Skin Month, we asked Dr. Sandy Skotnicki, a dermatologist
at Toronto’s St. Michael’s Hospital, for her insight into having fabulous skin,
hair, and eyelashes. Take a look at these top 6 secrets and start implementing
them today!

1. Wear
Sunscreen.

Dr. Skotnicki recommends wearing sunscreen as a
basis to your skincare routine. She stated, “sunscreen decreases
melanoma skin cancer and photoaging.”  Multiple
studies support Skotnicki’s claim. She cited a 2018 study
published in JAMA Dermatology which
looked into how frequent sunscreen use relates to melanoma risk in people under
the age of 40. According to the study comprised of people from 18-40, people
who regularly used sunscreen decrease their risk by 35 to 40 percent.

2. Use Retinol
Cream.

Having healthy-looking skin
requires a multi-pronged approach. In addition to preventive measures like
sunscreen, there are creams you can use to reduce wrinkles. Specifically,
Skotnicki suggests that people use retinol cream because it has been
demonstrated “to decrease photoaging and fine lines.” As you get older, your
skin produces less collagen and your skin cells replenish at a lower rate.
Retinol cream works by accelerating the skin renewal process, giving your
skin’s surface new cells and subsequently decreasing signs of aging. One study showed that for
the majority of patients, retinol cream demonstrated “significant improvement
in photoaging.”

3. Use
Latisse For Eyelash Growth.

Dr. Skotnicki isn’t only
interested in improving skincare. She also has tips for how to get thicker
eyelashes. She recommends Latise
(bimatoprost) because it “can thicken and lengthen fine hairs when used
regularly” by increasing the amount of time a “hair follicle stays in a growth
cycle before it is shed.”

4. Use
Vaniqa For Decreasing Hair Growth On Face.

Though not all women have facial
hair, some have issues with it. For those women, Dr. Skotnicki recommends they
use Vaniqa (Eflornithine) — a topical cream that has been proven to decrease
facial hair growth. Women who use it twice a day have been shown to have a decrease
of facial hair growth.

5. Use Glycolic
Acid Cream To Get Rid Of Acne And Melasma.

Do you want to get rid of your
acne or melasma? Dr. Skotnicki has got you covered. She suggests that people
use glycolic acid cream and “BHA and salicylic acid” to improve “acne, skin
pigmentation, and photoaging” through exfoliation. In addition, glycolic acid
cream can reduce melasma.
However, she recommends that people don’t “overuse them as they can lead to
redness and irritation of the skin.”

6. Use 2%
Clindamycin In 8% Glycolic Acid And For Ingrown Hair On Leg.

In addition to improving acne and
reducing melasma, along with 2% clindamycin, 8% glycolic acid can also be
fantastic for combating ingrown hairs. Dr. Skotnicki stated. “This solution is
very useful for ingrown hairs due to shaving and on the legs for women.” But
while it’s great for the face and legs, she says that these products are “too
strong” for other areas, like the groin and beneath one’s arms.
